ADNOC has announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Ruwais Diyab Unconventional Gas Development in Abu Dhabi, marking a major milestone in the UAE’s energy strategy and reinforcing the company’s ambition to expand its integrated global gas business.
The project, ADNOC’s first large-scale unconventional gas development, is expected to produce 345 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of raw gas from 2029, over an initial 25-year period. Production could potentially increase to 1 billion standard cubic feet per day in the future.
The gas will be processed on site and connected to the UAE’s national gas network through new pipeline infrastructure. This development will strengthen domestic energy supplies, support the country’s long-term economic and industrial growth, and contribute to ADNOC’s expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) export ambitions.
Commenting on the investment decision, His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, highlighted the project’s strategic importance in unlocking Abu Dhabi’s significant gas resources, enhancing national energy security and meeting growing energy demand in both domestic and international markets.
With the UAE holding the world’s seventh-largest natural gas reserves, including 298 trillion standard cubic feet of conventional gas and 160 trillion standard cubic feet of unconventional gas resources, the project represents an important step in maximizing the country’s energy potential.
Ruwais Diyab will also strengthen ADNOC’s integrated gas value chain and enhance ADNOC Gas’s capacity to serve growing demand from industrial and international customers. Its development reflects the increasing importance of reliable, lower-carbon energy in supporting industrial expansion and emerging sectors, including artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The project follows extensive technical studies, field testing and subsurface analysis conducted by ADNOC Onshore under a design-build-operate (DBO) model to reduce development risks. It will combine advanced subsurface expertise, AI-enabled drilling and completion technologies, and integrated project delivery capabilities to ensure efficient and responsible resource development.
Ultimately, Ruwais Diyab is expected to establish a scalable unconventional gas business for ADNOC, creating new opportunities for future growth while strengthening the UAE’s position as a reliable global energy supplier.
