MOL Group has inaugurated its first biomethane plant in Szarvas, Hungary, following an investment of over HUF 2.7 billion. The facility purifies biogas into high-quality biomethane suitable for injection into the national natural gas network, replacing more than 7 million cubic metres of natural gas annually—equivalent to the consumption of around 8,500 households.
The plant processes agricultural and industrial organic waste, including meat-processing waste, manure and agricultural residues, supporting the circular economy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Biomethane can also be used as a renewable fuel for public and freight transport.
This project represents a major step in MOL Group’s SHAPE TOMORROW strategy, strengthening energy security, expanding its renewable energy portfolio and promoting regional sustainability. The company will use the experience gained at Szarvas to assess future acquisitions and develop additional green energy investments.
