Shell Rotella, the lubricant manufacturer, announces an update to its heavy-duty engine oil lineup. These new formulations are designed to improve diesel engine protection, limit deposit formation, and meet the requirements of next-generation emissions control systems.
The API CL-4 standard is intended to succeed the CK-4 category. It aims to provide enhanced protection while maintaining compatibility with previous generations of engines using CK-4 oils, subject to the engine manufacturer’s recommendations.
Meanwhile, API FB-4 will succeed the FA-4 category. It covers lower-viscosity oils developed for certain next-generation engines. These formulations are designed in particular to reduce friction losses and improve fuel economy without compromising mechanical protection, provided the engine is approved for their use.
Shell has made the following claims regarding three products in its lineup:
- Shell Rotella T4 15W-40: 58% more effective deposit control than the previous CK-4 oil.
- Shell Rotella T5 10W-30: Exceeds oil degradation requirements by more than 90%.
- Shell Rotella T6 10W-30: Adaptive additive technology that provides, on average, 66% more wear protection than required, based on API CL-4 wear requirements.
Shell also plans to enhance its warranty coverage for its advanced synthetic blend and fully synthetic oils with the introduction of the new oils:
- Shell Rotella T4 Triple Protection: Coverage of 10 years or 300,000 miles.
- Shell Rotella T5 Advanced Synthetic Blend: Coverage increases from 10 years or 300,000 miles to 12 years or 400,000 miles.
- Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic: Coverage increases from 15 years or 500,000 miles to 15 years or 600,000 miles.
Shell states that Rotella is the No. 1 heavy-duty engine oil brand in North America.
